What exactly is endoscopy?
Endoscopy is a clinical procedure involving the examination of internal organs with an endoscope. A flexible tube with a light and camera at one end called an endoscope is generally inserted through the mouth or the bottom. The procedure is usually carried out when a patient faces difficulty swallowing, or has tummy pain, diarrhea, weight loss, heartburn, or indigestion.
Endoscopies are classified into several types. Gastroscopy is the examination of the digestive system, colonoscopy is a procedure that examines the bowel. Some other kinds include a Hysteroscopy, which examines the inside of the womb, a Capsule Endoscopy, and a Cystoscopy, which examines the inside of the bladder.

What kind of work would I do as an Endoscopy Nurse?
Our Endoscopy Nurses are involved in admitting patients, which includes checking in patients and preparing them for the procedure. You’d be working both in the examination room and in the recovery room after the procedure. You would be assisting with Colonoscopies, Gastroscopies, Flexible Sigmoidoscopies, Endoscopic Ultrasounds, Cannulation, and Venepuncture.
The work itself is extremely diverse. You would be performing diagnostic procedures for a variety of conditions, such as sore throats, swallowing difficulties, Dyspepsia, GORD, IBS, Gastric Ulcers, and Polyps.
Is it stressful to work as an endoscopy nurse?
Compared to working in busy wards, many people find endoscopy nursing to be significantly less stressful. Because it is specialised, it is more organised and less chaotic. Although it is hard work and can be fast-paced, it is controlled, which makes a significant difference.
The entire system is very effective, and all procedures are scheduled at specific times. Although there would normally be 12 procedures in the morning and 12 in the afternoon, the work can feel much less frantic because it is planned out and given a specific time slot.
What qualities do good endoscopy nurses have?
From preparing for an endoscopy to sending a patient home after the procedure, a good endoscopy nurse must be able to operate with ease throughout the entire process.
Endoscopy patients may be quite anxious, fearful, and vulnerable when they arrive.
The nurse’s role is to reassure and comfort them as they go through each step of the procedure. It is the nurse’s responsibility to answer any questions they may have.
Additionally, it’s crucial for an endoscopy nurse to be able to effectively communicate with the doctor, draw attention to any areas that need attention, and make sure that every aspect of the procedure is organised and managed, from the equipment to the paperwork.
Credentials or qualifications endoscopy nurses require to work with JP Medicals
